Ford, make me a Macan-sized conveyance (or just a good-old sedan) with the Mustang’s V8, suspension and a manual, and you’ve got my attention.

I love the looks of the pre-refresh Mustang (GT350 specifically - that noise! ) , but as a dad with 3 kids, it just doesn’t really work for me right now...

Because we enthusiast are extremely picky, and not all rich.

I actually had buyer’s remorse on my F30 (it was a semi-drunk purchase, after all) . Now I don’t anymore, considering these two will likely be my last purchases.

Is it really so scary to build something new? Why does it have to be Mustang-inspired? If Ford just said they were building a high-performance electric sport utility with a 300 mile range I would actually be pretty excited to see what they’ve got.

It’s where only Tesla’s been able to get it right on a major scale so far. Tesla manages to make intrinsically desirable and (love or hate Elon) undeiably cool EVs that own the fact they’re electric without rubbing your face in it. Just about every other EV is either trying too hard to not be an EV(Mustang inspired, give me a break ) or is the super-eco-earth-love- cloud mobile with too many EV stickers and decals, overly friendly bulbous styling  and attempts to sell people on just the fact it is electric while otherwise being undesirable crap.

I hope the crossover has a real name, and that “ Mach E” is just a trim level designation for it .

I was taking with my BIL the other day we came to the conclusion that the reason cars are getting cheaper is that it’s easier to sell thing to people who have money.

Any one who is actually concerned about price will buy used.

I’ve said it before that enthusiasts screw themselves with their picky attitudes and a general lack of actually buying new vehicles. I’m pretty sure 100% of the people screaming at GM for canceling their sedans never actually bought one.

it’s like one of my co-workers talking about how dumb Ford was for getting away from sedans. so we asked “what do you drive?” “An Expedition.” “How about your wife?” “An Explorer.”

‘nuff said.  you want enthusiast-oriented cars on the market? Buy them.

I agree with you, with the exception that Tesla is only 2 for 4 in terms of creating intrinsically desirable vehicles. The Roadster and S are great, desirable vehicles - the 3 and X are blob heaps of trash that people don’t actually desire so much as they buy because the 3 is cheaper and the X is, at best, a crossover .

What’s your opinion on BMW i3, vis a vis newness and/or tastiness?

I kinda forgot about that one. It does come close, but like other automakers BMW is still hedging their bets. When I think about an i3 though, I think ‘yeah, those are actually pretty cool, for an electric car.’ That caveat is still there. When I think of a Tesla, I think ‘yeah, those are pretty cool’.

Interesting. I’m fairly obsessed with the i3, there’s literally nothing ordinary about it. Even the window regulators are unusual. But it’s definitely low-performance and now that it’s no longer available with the moped-engine generator (!!!!!!!!!!!!), it’s even more doomed to failure than it was previously.

Way I see it, it’s neither more nor less futuristic than the Citroen DS.

I do like the i3 too but that’s exactly my point . The Model 3 and Model S manage to look and feel futuristic while also looking and feeling exactly like a nice luxury or near-luxury car(with some foibles, but they are really remarkably good for such a new company. The panel gaps are only a big deal if you’re looking for them ) . Someone who’s in the market for a 3-Series or an A4 and has an SUV or something they use for road trips anyway could end up with a Model 3 based on its merits, one of which being that it doesn’t need any gas,  even if they aren’t a super gung-ho electric transportation person. No one who wanted a 3-Series is going to buy an i3(by design, because I’m sure the margins are much higher on a 3-Series). They made a car for someone who really wanted an electric car, and would also like a BMW. Tesla’s trying to take a huge bite out of BMW’s bread-and-butter.
